08/11 Newburn Riverside: First gull session of the 'winter' Tyne quite quiet with no more than 300 large gulls present, best were 5 adult 'Northern' Herring Gulls argentatus and a pale-type juvenile Herring Gull.

 
Newbiggin: A single Swallow flew south just west of the Mound late morning. Offshore a short sea-watch produced Red-throated Diver 7 , 4 north and 3 south; Red-breasted Merganser female/immature south; Pink-footed Goose 28 flew north. Med Gull adult offshore.

Woodhorn Pools: Med Gull 1st-winter on south pool; Mallard 67 on north pool

24/01 Newburn: 8-900 Herring Gulls including 50+ argentatus and a flyover Meadow Pipit.
East Sleekburn: Crossbills 4 feeding in large plantation alongside village bypass (at least 3 males)


Woodhorn Flashes: Greenland White-fronted Geese 2 still, Stock Dove 2, Mediterranean Gulls 2 (adult and 2nd-winter), Pink-feet c.20 flew north.

23/01 Newbiggin: Gannet 1 adult south, 2 Red-throated Divers south, 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls around outfall. House Sparrow. Purple Sandpiper off Maritime Centre on seaward side of breakwater.
QEII Country Park: Goosander 3 (2 drakes and a female), Pochard 2-3
Cambois: Mediterranean Gull 1 adult off old Vald Birn site, also 5 1st-winter Kittiwakes amongst a c.250 strong mixed gull flock feeding in the breakers.

22/01 Pegswood-Morpeth-Mitford-Pegswood (Footit): Mistle Thrush 6, Nuthatch 5, Goldeneye 1 female/1st-winter, Grey Wagtails 2, Kingfisher 1, Little Grebe 1, Cormorant 1, Goosander 1 drake, Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker 1, Fieldfare, Redwing

20/01 Woodhorn/Woodhorn Flashes/Newbiggin: Woodcock 1 flushed near The Mound, Meadow Pipit 20 on football pitch/golf course. Coot 56 on south pool, Gadwall 2, Little Grebe 1, Mediterranean Gull 4 (3 adults and 2nd-winter). Fieldfares c.80 in stubble and horse fields at Spital.
Pegswood: Great Spotted Woodpecker in garden briefly; Moorhen 1 feeding on apples (1st garden record in 15 years)

19/01 Pegswood: Mistle Thrush on apples in garden; 1st since 2010. Collared Dove 4 presumably both cold weather related

14/01 Foot-It Pegswood-Bothal Pond-QEII Country Park: single drake Pochard on Bothal Pond; five Gadwall on QEII Lake, Goosander 1 drake, several Goldeneye, Treecreeper at entrance feeding station and single Red Squirrel.

13/01 Pegswood (work): Buzzard 1 between Pegswood and Longhirst; Sparrowhawk 1 flew east

12/01 Pegswood: single Brambling in the garden.

 10/01 East Chevington: (with MMc) Shoveler 5 flew off south, Gadwall, Pochard 5, Long-tailed Duck 1 still, Stonechat male by beach pool, Red-breasted Merganser 5 offshore.

09/01 Woodhorn Flashes: Mediterranean Gull 2 (adult & 2nd-winter) on south pool; Greenland White-fronted Geese 2 in stubble west of Church Pool.
Newbiggin: Razorbill 1, Red-throated Diver 2, Fulmar 1, Mediterranean Gull 8 (6 ads, 2W & 1W) Spital: Grey Wagtail 1 at outfall. Sandy Bay: Curlew 57, Woodpigeon 550, Golden Plover 43. Coopers Kennels Fields: Lapwing c.150, Sparrowhawk 1 over.

07/01 Foot-It Pegswood-Hepscott - Bothal Sawmill-Pegswood (09:30-12:00) Golden Plover 4 in fields west of Pegswood Fire Station. Bullfinch at East Mill. Linnets c.100 in turnip fields north of Hepscott village along with at least 6 Stock Doves. 26 Fieldfares in trees south of Healeywood Farm. 25 Yellowhammers in Sunflower Strip at Whitefield Farm.

05/01 Foot-It Pegswood (Viz Mig from Old Pit Heap): Great Black-backed Gull adult over the Wansbeck, 2 Siskin flew south and Jay present. 25-30 Pink-feet moving around from fields north of Bothal Pond to east.

04-01 Foot-It Pegswood-East Shield Farm-Longhirst-Pegswood: Two Buzzards in sheep fields west of Pegswood Cp, two Meadow Pipit on south side of crater. Reed Bunting west of Longhirst GC, c.100 Canada Geese in horse fields. Two Nuthatch at entrance to Longhirst Hall, singing Mistle Thrush at Longhirst Hall. Grey Heron on wet flash north of Pegswood CP.

29-12-12 Home: post-work dog walk to Pegswood CP produced a profusion of dabbling ducks at dusk; all Mallard, but 44 might be the highest count I've had there in 16 years.

28-12-12 Blyth A single Waxwing on cotoneasters along town centre bypass just east of gas storage tower mid-afternoon.

19-12-12 Newbiggin Church Point (10:00-11:00): Golden Plover 22 flew south; Common Scoter 1 female/immature south. Med Gull 7 on south beach (5 adults, two 2nd-winters).
Ashington Community Woodland: Moorhen 7, Coal Tit 1.

18-12-12 Newbiggin Church Point (09:45-10:45): Gannet 3 (2 adults and 4th winter) flew north; Fulmar 2 around outfall; Red-throated Diver 3 flew north; Med Gull 2-4 adults, two feeding off outfall same or further two later on south beach; Common Scoter 1 north.
QEII Country Park (10:55) Goosander 1 drake; Pochard 3
Newburn (11:35-14:30): Viking Gull, 1 1st-winter, (see post) CR Ringed Herring Gulls I210 left orange; T310 left yellow. Red Kite one flew south over Summerhill Folley just 200m away from the Tyne. Several argentatus Herring Gulls.

 17-12-12 Home (school run): Picked up seven Waxwings in hedges and scrub west of village near Whorral Bank roundabout this afternoon.


16-12-12 Home (dog walk): Great Spotted Woodpecker in Park Wood; (football) 28 Oystercatchers on sports field at Blyth Community College this afternoon.

13-12-12 Home (work): Three Tree Sparrows in hedge beyond garden early morning; 3 Siskins in garden and single Brambling in scrub mid-morning. Female Gt. Spotted Woodpecker in scrub mid-afternoon.

12-12-12 - Newbiggin Church Pt-Beacon Pt Grey Plover 3, Bar-tailed Godwit 3, Dunlin 19, Rock Pipit 2, Purple Sandpiper 1, Red-throated Diver 1, Goldeneye 1 flew north. Ellington Lane Buzzard 1.

11-12-12 - Newburn, incoming tide, fewer gulls, 2-3 1st-winter Viking Gull-types photographed; 2 Bullfinches (male/female) in birches; several Teal, 2-3 adult Black-headed Gulls with summer hoods.
East Chevington - 27 Goldeneyes on north pool, 2-3 Little Grebes. Woodcock flushed from beside path at south end of south pool, 2 Wrens through reedbed and at least 1 Water Rail heard calling south of sluice. Morpeth A1 Buzzard west of Morpeth, north of Clifton.

10-12-12 - Home Northern Winter Moth potted from the kitchen window early evening, garden tick!

06-12-12 - East Chevington Red-throated Diver, juvenile on north pool then flew out to sea. 

04-12-12 - Warkworth Gut 150 Teal north of footbridge, 2 Stonechats and 2 Snow Buntings on beach at south end. Newbiggin Little Owl.

Can you suggest sites for kingfisher and have you ever been to Fair Isle? Could you give me some pointers on good birding sites around Pegswood and nearby. Trying to get more into birding and I often read your blogs as they help my novice ID skills!!
