Summer Creeps On

I drove up to the Long Nanny yesterday morning to see if I could catch up with the reported Black Tern, that wasn't to be. A single pair of Little Terns and a 2nd-summer Mediterranean Gull were among a relatively small number of c 200-250 Arctic Terns. Impressive numbers of Skylark though with 15-20 counted between the car park and the burn.

Yesterday evening with a heavy shower approaching I headed to Castle Island, again with Black Tern on the brain and again that proved unsuccessful. Through the rain I managed a tatty 1st-summer Mediterranean Gull, the long-staying female Blue-winged Teal now in the company of a handful of drake Common Teal, my first ginger juvenile Black-headed Gull of the year and a small post-breeding gathering of 15 Lapwings.
